The Native Woodland Trust is dedicated to the preservation of Ireland’s remaining ancient woodlands. They are also committed to the restoration of Ireland’s original climax ecosystem, through the re-creation of woodlands, using only native seed.
They have carefully documented their aims which have all been included in the legal documents governing the organisation. These aims are:
1. The protection, preservation and expansion of Ireland’s existing ancient and semi-natural woodlands.
2. The creation of new woodlands throughout Ireland, where these would naturally occur.
3. The restoration of the original flora, fauna and avi-fauna of Ireland’s woodlands
4. To increase native woodland bio-diversity through suitable habitat creation and sensitive management.
5. The preservation of every species and identifiable genotype of Ireland’s native trees.
The Native Woodland Trust currently manage 7 reserves, in Wicklow, Meath, Westmeath, Waterford and Leitrim with their latest site situated in Girley bog, County Meath.[/tab][tab]The Native Woodland Trust is pioneering a new initiative to create community woodland reserves in each county of Ireland. These reserves will be planted with native Irish woodland species. These oaks, alder and spindle will then grow along with the local community as the reserve transforms into a thriving natural community space. To find out more about this project click here

The Native Woodland Trust also carry out school projects throughout the year such as ‘Trees for Schools’. To find out more about the success of these projects click here
They also regularly host a seed collection day at various sites. See the events page to find out more about this and other events held by the Native Woodland trust.
