Pillar report highlights “illegal and irresponsible” planning
7th July 2012 – Dublin. Environmental experts have said the development and implementation of the Government Food Harvest 2020 policy would be “illegal and irresponsible” if it was carried out without a serious look at how it impacts on the long-term well-being of the country.
The warning was published by The Environmental Pillar in its response to the consultation on the Environmental Analysis of Scenarios Related to Implementation of Recommendations in Food Harvest 2020 today.
“We hope that the Government will fulfil its legal and leadership responsibilities, and screen this Government Strategic Policy, Food Harvest 2020 for the need to conduct Appropriate Assessments under the Habitats Directive, and subject it to a full, if belated, Strategic Environmental Assessment” said Michael Ewing, speaking on behalf of the Environmental Pillar.
“The development and implementation of this Government Strategic Policy without the serious look at how it impacts on the long-term well-being of the country is both illegal and irresponsible. This current process does not live up to those responsibilities,” he added.
